Redistricting Reform Implementation

California Forward is working to ensure a transparent and public process to create California’s first Citizens Redistricting Commission, approved by voters in 2008 with the passage of Prop 11.

The Latest: Over 30,000 Californians applied to be on the new Citizens Redistricting Commission! To view a list of applicants, go to wedrawthelines.ca.gov.

Background

Until voters passed Prop 11, state legislators drew their own district lines.  Starting in 2010, political districts will be drawn by voters, for voters.  This is a critical step toward restoring trust and confidence in state government, and improving legislative accountability.  For more information, see our Redistricting Fact Sheet.

Why it Matters

The new redistricting process will be more open and transparent.

What We Are Doing

California Forward is identifying all of the actions that need to be taken to have a successful new redistricting system in California.  We are working to ensure that this reform results in greater participation in the redistricting process, more responsiveness to voters when district lines are being drawn, and greater confidence in the system and elections as a result our efforts include:  conducting outreach to potential applicants, ensuring the Commissioners are prepared, making the redistricting process itself visible to as many people as possible and finding ways for interested people to be engaged.
